Forza Motorsport 3

I think I was about as excited as everybody else when Turn 10 Studios released the very first trailer for ‘the most advanced and intense driving game of our generation’, Forza Motorsport 3. It looked trick happy, thrilling and most of all, it was absolutely stunning. The landscapes. The cars. Even the soundtrack appealed to me. So like everyone else, in October 2009, I went out and I bagged myself a copy of what I was sure would drown all my past driving-related gaming experiences, in the deep sea of contempt.  When in fact, all it did was get them a little bit wet.

On first impression, it was just plain average. Yes, the cars were beautiful, thanks to the use of 10 times more polygons than in Forza’s last release, but that seemed to be about the only graphical focus of the game. Although the environments, shadows and lighting were realistic and equally as awe-inspiring, they were blocked by ugly and rigid, 2D looking stadiums and sky boxes. The track boundaries consisted of pixalated straight lines which if anything, were distracting and irksome. And that’s pretty much where the fun stopped.

Forza Motorsport 3 had nothing new to offer me, apart from it’s improved ‘polygon car technology thingie’. Granted, the convincing car damage did impress me, but this was after trying to play the game properly and deciding eventually that in fact crashing and infuriating the computer players was a much more enjoyable way to spend my time. When you finally get onto playing your first race, you’ve waited so long on the loading screen that you could have gone outside and driven 12 laps of your neighbourhood before the clock begins to count down. And it’s exactly this tediousness and lack of any sort of riveting approach that caused my brain to shut off and go into boredom mode, which coincidently, didn’t affect me when my car decided it was time to race.

So the clocks counting down. Your palms are sweating. Engines around you are revving. And the second you release the hand brake and speed off, your intelligence is instantly patronised as you see those little speed and directional arrows on floor, basically teaching you how to drive. For new gamers, this must be a life saver, but for past and pro gamers, I felt belittled and demeaned. Going into the options menu, the choice to turn it off was available, and that I did, but the fact that it was instantly there ‘just in case you’re an idiot’ was aggravating. The game now felt like a mock driving test. It was more of a driving simulation game, than a ‘fun-speedy-go-faster’ game.
